Maribel Tineo, Lecturer in Human Development, received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Education from Harvard University. She also obtained a School Building Leader license through Baruch College as part of a leadership program sponsored by the New York City Department of Education. She was selected by the New York City Department of Education for an extended leadership studies program, where she conducted research on the challenges facing New York City public schools and best practices for improving struggling schools. Maribel Tineo has decades of experience in the New York City public-school system. She has served as a teacher, teacher developer, policy maker, and administrator, specializing in high school curriculum, pedagogy, and successful school structures. As a teacher, she taught global and American history, economics, and US government, among other subjects. As a school administrator, she supported efforts to expand networks of schools using performance-based assessments as part of high school graduation requirements. She has been a founding member of various schools focusing on addressing the needs of underserved students and families, including new-to-English students. Maribel also worked on educational policy for the New York City Department of Education, helping schools to develop collaborative team structures and teacher evaluation systems. Currently, Maribel teaches education and development courses with an emphasis on how macro-level policies and structures shape the lives of individuals, families, and communities as well as the critical importance of economic empowerment as a prerequisite for justice and equality.
